The film premiered at South by Southwest on March 11, 2022, and began a limited theatrical release in the United States on March 25, 2022, before a wide release on April 8, 2022, by A24. It has grossed over $58 million worldwide, becoming the studio’s highest-grossing film domestically. The film was acclaimed by critics, who lauded its imagination, direction, the performances of the cast, and its handling of themes such as existentialism, nihilism, and Asian American identity.
This movie is fucking awesome! It has everything I could want: balls to the wall action, absurd humor, existential identity crisis, and all that other good stuff. Michelle Yeoh gives such an amazing performance, balancing between comedic and dramatic, while also being a total badass!
The rest of the cast is also top notch, I’m glad to see Ke Huy Quan back in movies again after a long absence (The Goonies being a major staple of my childhood), and he also gets some really cool action moments (you’ll never look at a fanny pack the same way again).
This is the kind of movie that can appeal to audiences in various ways. You want an over the top action comedy? You got it! A story of a mother and daughter trying to understand each other? Yup! Cultural identity and generation misunderstandings? Sure! Trying to figure out who you are, why you’re here, and what directions led you to where you are? Check! There’s a lot going on, and it’s all fascinating. Give this one a watch for sure!
