Alejandro González Iñárritu (born August 15, 1963) is a Mexican filmmaker. He is primarily known for making modern psychological drama films about the human condition. His projects have garnered critical acclaim and numerous accolades including four Academy Awards with a Special Achievement Award, three Golden Globe Awards, three BAFTA Awards, two Directors Guild of America Awards. He is good friends with fellow Mexican filmmakers Guillermo del Toro and Alfonso Cuarón, who are known as “The Thees Amigos” in the film industry, confounding the production company Cha Cha Cha Films.

He made his feature directorial debut with Amores perros (2000), with Emilio Echevarría, Gael García Bernal, Goya Toledo, Álvaro Guerrero, Vanessa Bauche, Jorge Salinas, and Adriana Barraza; which was nominated for the Academy Award for Best International Film. He gained further acclaim with 21 Grams (2003), with Sean Penn, Naomi Watts, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Danny Huston, Benicio Del Toro, Mellisa Leo, Clea DuVall, and Eddie Marsan; Babel (2006), with Brad Pitt, Cate Blanchett, Bernal, Elle Fanning, Clifton Collins Jr., Michael Peña, Adriana Barraza, Kōji Yakusho, and Rinko Kikuchi – earning his first Academy Award nomination for Best Director; and Biutiful (2010), with Javier Bardem; the latter also being nominated for Best International Film.

He won the Academy Awards for Best Original Screenplay, Best Director, and Best Picture for Birdman (2014), with Zach Galifianakis, Edward Norton, Andrea Riseborough, Amy Ryan, Emma Stone, and Watts. He’s only a handful of people win all 3 categories for a single film along with Billy Wilder, Francis Ford Coppola, James L. Brooks, Peter Jackson, Joel & Ethan Coen, Bong Joon-ho, and Daniel Kwan & Daniel Scheinert. He won his second Academy Award for Best Director for The Revenant (2015), with Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hardy, Domhnall Gleeson, Will Poulter, and Lukas Haas; sharing back to back honors with John Ford and Joseph L. Mankiewicz.

His most recent film was Bardo (2022), with Daniel Giménez Cacho and Griselda Siciliani. He’s also been a producer or executive producer on Rodrigo García’s Nine Lives (2005), with Sissy Spacek, Glenn Close, Holly Hunter, Lisa Gay Hamilton, Kathy Baker, Amanda Seyfried, Amy Brenneman, Robin Wright, Aidan Quinn, K Callan, Dakota Fanning, Ian McShane, Mary Kay Place, Molly Parker, Sydney Tamiia Poitier, Elpidia Carrillo, Jason Isaacs, Miguel Sandoval, and Joe Mantegna; Carlos Curán’s Rudo y Cursi (2008), with Diego Luna, Bernal, and Guillermo Francella; and Mother and Child (2009), with Watts, Annette Bening, Kerry Washington, Jimmy Smits, Samuel L. Jackson, David Morse, and David Ramsey.
