Sean Baker (born February 26, 1971) is an American filmmaker. He is a director, writer, editor, and producer of independent feature films which are most often about the lives of marginalized people, especially immigrants and sex workers. He made his directorial film debut with Four Letter Words (2000), with David Ari, Henry Beylin, Fred Berman, and Darcy Bledsoe. He also co-created the television sitcom Greg the Bunny (2002–2006), with Eugene Levy, Seth Green, Bob Gunton, Sarah Silverman, Dina Waters, Drew Massey, and Dan Milano.
Baker has since directed the filmsTake Out (2004), with Charles Jang, Jeng-Hua Yu, Wang-Thye Lee, and Justin Wan; Prince of Broadway (2008), with Prince Adu and Karren Karagulian; Starlet (2012), with Dree Hemingway, Besedka Johnson, Stella Maeve, James Ransone, and Karren Karagulian; Tangerine (2015), with Kitana Kiki Rodriguez, Mya Taylor, Karagulian, Mickey O’Hagan, Alla Tumanian, and Ransone; The Florida Project (2017), with Willem Dafoe, Brooklynn Kimberly Prince, Bria Vinaite, Valeria Cotto, Christopher Rivera, and Caleb Landry Jones; Red Rocket (2021), with Simon Rex, Bree Elrod, and Suzanna Son; and Anora (2024), with Mikey Madison, Mark Eydelshteyn, Yura Borisov, Karren Karagulian, Vache Tovmasyan, Darya Ekamasova, and Aleksei Serebryakov.
For his work on Anora, Baker received several accolades, including the Palme d’Or and the BAFTA Award for Best Casting, alongside his wife Samantha Quan. He is the first person to win four Academy Awards (Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Film Editing) for a single film, also tying the record (with Walt Disney) for most Academy Awards won in a single ceremony. He’s a handful of people to win the Best Picture, Director, and Screenplay (others include Billy Wilder, Francis Ford Coppola, James L. Brooks, Peter Jackson, Joel & Ethan Coen, Alejandro G. Iñárritu, Bong Joon-ho, Daniel Kwan & Daniel Scheinert, and Paul Thomas Anderson).
