Ang Lee OBS (Chinese: 李安; pinyin: Lǐ Ān; born 23 October 1954) is a Taiwanese filmmaker. Born in the Pingtung County of southern Taiwan, Lee was educated in Taiwan and later in the United States. During his filmmaking career he has received international critical and popular acclaim and a range of accolades.

Lee’s early successes included Pushing Hands (1991), with Shiung Lung; The Wedding Banquet (1993), with Winston Chao, May Chin, Gua Ah-leh, Lung, and Mitchell Lichtenstein; and Eat Drink Man Woman (1994), with Lung, Yu-wen Wang, Chien-lien Wu, and Kuei-mei Yang; which explored the relationships and conflicts between tradition and modernity, Eastern and Western; the three films are informally known as the “Father Knows Best” trilogy. The films were critically successful both in his native Taiwan and internationally.

Lee’s first entirely English-language film was Sense and Sensibility (1995), with Emma Thompson, Kate Winslet, Alan Rickman, Imogen Stubbs, Hugh Grant, Greg Wise, Gemma Jones, Hugh Laurie, Imelda Staunton, and Tom Wilkinson; for which he received critical praise and a number of accolades. Other films of the late 1990s include The Ice Storm (1997), with Kevin Kline, Joan Allen, Tobey Maguire, Christina Ricci, Elijah Wood, Katie Holmes, Glenn Fitzgerald, Jamey Sheridan, and Sigourney Weaver; and Ride with the Devil (1999), with Maguire, Skeet Ulrich, Jeffrey Wright, Jewel, Simon Baker, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Jonathan Brandis, Jim Caviezel, Mark Ruffalo, and Celia Weston.

Lee received his first Academy Award nomination for Best Director for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000), with Chow Yun-fat, Michelle Yeoh, Zhang Ziyi, Chang Chen, and Cheng Pei-pei; which won 4 Academy Awards including Best Foreign Language Film. He would go on to win Best Director for Brokeback Mountain (2005), with Heath Ledger, Jake Gyllenhaal, Linda Cardellini, Anna Faris, Anne Hathaway, Michelle Williams, and Randy Quaid; and Life of Pi (2012), with Suraj Sharma, Irrfan Khan, Rafe Spall, Tabu, Adil Hussain, and Gérard Depardieu.

Dan Fogler, Henry Goodman, Jonathan Groff, Eugene Levy, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Staunton, Emile Hirsch, Liev Schreiber, and Paul Dano; Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk (2016), with Joe Alwyn, Garrett Hedlund, Kristen Stewart, Vin Diesel, Steve Martin, and Chris Tucker; and Gemini Man (2019), with Will Smith, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Clive Owen, and Benedict Wong.
