
Allison Anders (born November 16, 1954) is an American independent film director. With fellow UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television graduate Kurt Voss, she co-directed the films Border Radio (1987), with Chris D., John Doe, Chris Shearer, and Luanna Anders; and Sugar Town with Rosanna Arquette, Beverly D’Angelo, Ally Sheedy, Martin Kemp, John Taylor, and Michael Des Barres; and Strutter (2012), with Flannery Lunsford, Dante White-Aliano, Elyse Hollander, Craig Stark, Luana Anders, Terry Graham, Ariel Pink, Victoria Williams, Sara Ashley, Nick Jones, and Ryan Erskine.
Her solo films include Gas Food Lodging (1992), with Brooke Adams, Ione Skye, Fairuza Balk, and James Brolin; Mi Vida Loca (1994), with Angel Aviles, Seidy López, Jacob Vargas, Panchito Gómez, Jesse Borrego, Danny Trejo, Salma Hayek, Spike Jonze, and Jason Lee; Grace of My Heart (1996), with Illeana Douglas, Matt Dillon, Eric Stoltz, Patsy Kensit, John Turturro, Bruce Davison, and Bridget Fonda; and Things Behind the Sun (2001), with Kim Dickens, Gabriel Mann, Don Cheadle, Arquette, Alison Folland, Elizabeth Peña, Stoltz, CCH Pounder, Shawn Reavers, and Kensit.

With Alexandre Rockwell, Robert Rodriguez, and Quentin Tarantino she co-wrote and co-directed the anthology comedy Four Rooms (1995), with Tim Roth, Sammi Davis, Amanda de Cadenet, Valeria Golino, Madonna, Ione Skye, Lili Taylor, and Alicia Witt. She’s also directed the TV movies A Crush On You (2011), with Brigid Brannagh, Sean Patrick Flannery, Christine Scott Bennett, Tug Coker, Connor Gibbs, and Michael Clarke Duncan; and Ring of Fire (2013), with Jewel, Matt Ross, Doe, and Frances Conroy.
Her films have been shown at the Cannes International Film Festival and at the Sundance Film Festival. She has been awarded a MacArthur Genius Grant as well as a Peabody Award. She’s also directed episodes of such shows as Sex and the City, Grosse Pointe, Cold Case, The L Word, Men In Trees, The Mentalist, and What About Brian?
