The tale of an extraordinary family, the Madrigals, who live hidden in the mountains of Colombia, in a magical house, in a vibrant town, in a wondrous, charmed place called an Encanto. The magic of the Encanto has blessed every child in the family with a unique, supernatural ability except one, Mirabel (Beatriz). But when she discovers that the magic surrounding the Encanto is in danger, Mirabel decides that she, the only ordinary Madrigal, might just be her exceptional family’s last hope.

It’s a Disney animated movie, so it’s very rare that I’m not interested in seeing something they make. Sure, the story of a family member that’s the odd one out isn’t anything new (especially for the house of mouse), but hey, they’re at least highlighting a culture that the general public in America may not see on a regular basis. Also Mirabel is totally adorkable! As someone from a large family, I get the feeling a anxiety when you’re not sure you’re living up to expectations. Although I could imagine anyone has had those feelings regardless of family size.

You got the high quality animation you expect from the company, tons of vibrant colors, solid voice acting and singing from the cast, more memorable songs from the always reliable Lin-Manuel Miranda (guessing he was too busy to provide any voice work), and plenty of comedic and heartwarming moments. It’s Disney, at this point you know whether you’ll be interested in seeing it or not. I definitely say go for it!

There’s also an adorable short film that plays before the movie called Far from the Tree.
