The Suicide Squad (2021)

The film was theatrically released in the United Kingdom on July 30, 2021, and released in the United States on August 5, while streaming on HBO Max for a month starting the same day. It received positive reviews from critics, who praised Gunn’s direction, the visual style and irreverent humor, with many noting it being a significant improvement over its predecessor (not a difficult thing to accomplish really).

I put a lot of faith in James Gunn, because I’ve liked a lot of his other projects. I’m so glad that faith paid off! My God is this way better than the previous installment, which was a gigantic piece of shit! How that one made any money is mind boggling, but the silver lining was we got Birds of Prey: and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn (2020), which was also super fun, and this one! It looks like DC is starting to get its shit together. Only took them nearly a fucking decade! I don’t want their movies to suck! I grew up with Batman: The Animated series and whole bunch of other DC properties, so I know they’re capable of making decent things.

The action is well shot and exciting, the violence wonderfully over the top, and things that are meant to be funny are actually funny, as opposed to any unintentional laughs that might have come from the utter cringe of the previous film (I can’t help but bring up comparisons folks). Once again there is color and I can see shit happening on screen! It also all gets started within like 5 minutes of starting, no half hour of tedious exposition!

The cast does a great job too. I’m really glad Robbie didn’t give up playing Harley Quinn after Moron Squad, because she totally nails this role. She’s actually funny (like in Birds of Prey), she serves a purpose in being part of the plot, and she’s not just there to be eye banged by the audience. Davis is properly menacing as Waller, she’s not just here to spew out dull exposition to the audience like before.

The rest of the villains are great too, each has some actual personality, and leaves an impact, none of them feel wasted. Everyone bounces off each other well, Elba in particular is great as essentially the straight man of the group, often given some nice deadpan reactions.

Best of all there is no Jared Leto and his fucking embarrassing performance as Joker! Holy shit was he awful! Worst Joker ever! Seriously, fuck that performance!

If you’re resistant to see it because of the shit show that was the previous (which I can understand, I was very reluctant to believe in this), give it a chance, especially if you’ve liked other films by James Gunn.
