When renowned crime novelist Harlan Thrombey (Plummer) is found dead at his estate just after his 85th birthday, the inquisitive and debonair Detective Benoit Blanc (Craig) is mysteriously enlisted to investigate. From Harlan’s dysfunctional family to his devoted staff, Blanc sifts through a web of red herrings and self-serving lies to uncover the truth behind Harlan’s untimely death. The film received critical acclaim, with particular praise for Johnson’s screenplay and direction as well as its acting, and it so far has earned over $83 million worldwide against a $40 million budget. I was looking forward to this the moment I heard of it and then saw a trailer. I’m a fan of director Rian Johnson (his first film Brick also being a detective story) plus most of the cast. I was definitely not disappointed!

This is a solid, modern day whodunnit, filled with sharp dialogue, terrific acting, and clever twists that you may or may not see coming depending on how big a fan of detective stories you are. Even if some of the twists you figure out ahead of time it’ll be fun to see how characters reach the conclusions. This was made by a person who loves the crime genre and knows their stuff. Everyone plays their parts well, and all are given enough motivation to be put on the suspect list. Daniel Craig has a nice southern drawl as Blanc, who at times seems clueless, but other times a very keen observer.

The film looks great too, amazing use of color and shadows to give characters an ominous presence when the scene calls for it. If you’re a fan of the detective genre then you definitely should see it, but being a fan a good films is also a sufficient reason to see it.
