[Possible spoilers to a story that’s around a few thousand years old and has been taught in school for Zeus knows how long and adapted and referenced numerous times!]
In the time of Ancient Greece, after years fighting in the Trojan War, Odysseus (Damon), King of Ithaca, goes on a perilous journey to be reunited with his wife Penelope (Hathaway) and son Telemachus (Holland). Guided by the goddess Athena (Zendaya), he faces the wrath of the gods Zeus and Poseidon, encounters deadly creatures, offered temptations beyond his wildest dreams, and even takes a journey into the Underworld.
Meanwhile, back in Ithaca, Penelope and Telemachus deal with a room full of rowdy men, eager to marry Penelope and take the throne, particularly the ruthless Antinous (Pattinson).
I’ve been familiar with The Odyssey since I was a little kid, which makes sense because as mentioned above it’s been taught in school forever, plus been adapted and referenced numerous times in all sorts of media. The Trojan Horse alone is one of the most iconic moments of deception. It’s safe to say it’s one of the definitive “hero’s journey” tales.
Personally, I’ve yet to really be disappointed by Christopher Nolan as a filmmaker. He’s made some movies I don’t like as much as some of his others, but I can’t deny that the man knows his craft and this latest from him is no exception! The budget and scope of the story is on full display here. Gorgeous locations abound, painted in beautiful cinematography courtesy of Hoyte van Hoytema, who I have no doubt will be receiving another Academy Award nomination.
Matt Damon is phenomenal as Odysseus, bringing a great sense of strength and vulnerability when needed. The rest of the cast is solid too, as one would expect from much of the well known cast. I especially loved Samantha Morton as the witch Circe, she’s an actress who always delivers! John Leguizamo is another standout performance as the blind swineherd Eumaeus.
So yeah, highly recommend you see this!
