
Wong Kar-wai BBS (王家卫; born July17, 1958) is a Hong Kong film director, screenwriter, and producer. His films are characterised by nonlinear narratives, atmospheric music, and vivid cinematography involving bold, saturated colours. A pivotal figure of Hong Kong cinema, he is considered a contemporary auteur, and ranks third on Sight & Sound’s 2002 poll of the greatest filmmakers of the previous 25 years. His films frequently appear on best-of lists domestically and internationally. He began his career writing or co-writing on films like Joe Cheung’s Rosa (1986), with Yuen Biao, Lowell Lo, Luk Siu-fan, Kara Hui and Paul Chun; Patrick Tam’s Final Victory (1987), with Eric Tsang, Loletta Lee, Margaret Lee, and Tsui Hark; and Flaming Brothers (1987), with Chow Yun-fat, Alan Tang, Pat Ha, and Jenny Tseng. He made his directorial debut with As Tears Go By (1988), with Andy Lau, Maggie Cheung and Jacky Cheung.
