
Sir Stephen Arthur Frears (June 20, 1941) is an English director and producer of film and television often depicting real life stories as well as projects that explore social class through sharply drawn characters. He has received numerous accolades including three BAFTA Awards, and a Primetime Emmy Award as well as nominations for two Academy Awards. In 2008, The Daily Telegraph named Frears among the 100 most influential people in British culture. In 2009, he received the Commandeur de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. He received a knighthood in 2023 for his contributions to the film and television industries.

He made his feature directorial debut with Gumshoe (1971), with Albert Finney and Billie Whitelaw. Films in the 1980s including The Hit (1984), with John Hurt, Terence Stamp, Laura del Sol and Tim Roth; My Beautiful Laundrette (1985), with Daniel Day-Lewis; Prick Up Your Ears (1987), with Gary Oldman, Alfred Molina, Vanessa Redgrave, and Wallace Shawn; Sammy and Rosie Get Laid (1987), with Shashi Kapoor, Frances Barber, Claire Bloom, Ayub Khan-Din, Roland Gift, and Wendy Gazelle; and Dangerous Liaisons (1988), with Glenn Close, John Malkovich, Michelle Pfeiffer, Swoosie Kurtz, Mildred Natwick, Peter Capaldi, Keanu Reeves, and Uma Thurman.

Frears received his first Academy Award nomination for Best Director for The Grifters (1990), with John Cusack, Anjelica Huston, and Annette Bening.
