Superman (Corenswet) must prove to the world that he is their protector after billionaire Lex Luthor (Hoult) conducts a plan to turn public opinion against him.
James Gunn is a filmmaker that has yet to disappoint me, I’ve enjoyed every movie he’s directed so far. And this is no exception! The man understands what makes Superman great! This isn’t some violent, edge lord bullshit, where Supes causes unnecessary destruction, he’s going out of his way to keep people safe. What a novel fucking concept! He’s not being treated as some savior character, but a heroic figure with his own worries about whether or not he’s making a difference in the world.
Corenswet is a great Clark Kent/Superman, like Christopher Reeve before him, he balances both personas perfectly. Rachel Brosnahan is a terrific Lois Lane, plenty of take no shit attitude, and she has solid chemistry with Corenswet. Hoult makes a great Luthor, perfectly intimidating, but still a petty asshole. To not make this such a lengthy review, I’ll just say the rest of the cast plays their parts exceptionally. [Side note: I was excited to see Pruitt Taylor Vince as Pa Kent! He’s such a great actor and I’m always happy to see him in things!]
Anyone complaining about the sometimes campy tone must really not be familiar with comic books, or they think a movie being campy here and there is inherently bad. It’s not! When the movie is meant to be taken seriously, it does the job. It’s got solid action set pieces, great character moments, colorful visuals, and most importantly heart. I highly recommend this, and can’t wait to see what Gunn does next!
