After a family tragedy, three generations of the Deetz family return home to Winter River. Still haunted by Betelgeuse (Keaton), Lydia’s (Ryder) life is turned upside down when her teenage daughter, Astrid (Ortega), accidentally opens the portal to the Afterlife.

Meanwhile, Betelgeuse’s afterlife is turned upside down when the woman responsible for his death (Bellucci), literally puts herself back together to find him and complete a ritual she began during the Black Plague (also she has the ability to destroy souls). Even with the advent of the internet I don’t plan on spoiling anymore plot details than that.

I’m a fan of Tim Burton (and most of the cast), I grew up with the Beetlejuice cartoon and original movie, so you bet I was looking forward to seeing this. Sure, a sequel coming out decades later doesn’t always work out, but a lot of those worries were went away when I saw the trailer and heard a lot of emphasis was put towards using practical effects. [I don’t have the issue a lot seem to have with CGI, but I definitely appreciate the use of models, sets, and prosthetics.]

Burton still has that visual flair, this movie looks amazing! You wouldn’t guess Keaton, Ryder, and O’Hara haven’t played these roles in over 30 years, they’ve returned to these roles seamlessly. It’s a shame we don’t have Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis back, but time as moved forward and ghosts don’t typically age (Keaton would at least be in makeup to cover his aging), so the explanation for their absence is sufficient. [And yes, I know why Baldwin wouldn’t be available, same goes for Jeffery Jones as Charles Deetz, don’t really wanna bring that up here.]

Ortega, Bellucci, Theroux, and Dafoe are fun additions, they’re all great performers that I’ve enjoyed in other productions, and I think they’re all perfect for a Burton film. So yeah, this is a recommend from me.
