In Philadelphia in 1999, free spirited Jamie (Qualley), has recently dumped by cop girlfriend, Sukie (Feldstein), and kicked out of their apartment. She decides to tag along with best friend, tightly wound Marian (Viswanthan), on a trip to Tallahassee, Florida to visit an aunt.

Things quickly go awry when it turns out their car from a drive-away service (where someone can transport a car one-way for another client) was meant for criminals Arliss (Slotnik) and Flint (Wilson), who were also going to Tallahassee. They’re ordered by Chief (Domingo) to track them down and get the contents in the trunk of the car.

This is directed Ethan Coen, best known for co-writing and directing several movies with his older brother Joel. The elder Coen made his solo directing debut with The Tragedy of Macbeth (2021), while the younger makes his solo narrative debut* with this. He also co-wrote the film with his wife, Tricia Cooke, who has assisted them on editing their movies for 30+ years now; she edits this one too. [*Ethan had previously solo directed the documentary Jerry Lee Lewis: Trouble in Mind (2022).]
The movie got mixed reviews, and I can’t say I’m that surprised given this is a movie by one half of the Coen Brothers. Their movies tend to be divisive as they rarely stick to one genre, plus they love to skew conventions and mess with genre tropes, also the humor can be very dry. Personally, that’s exactly why I love them! This one is no exception!
I’ve been a fan of Qualley and Viswanathan for a while now and I think they had solid chemistry, the rest of the supporting cast does a solid job too.
Your enjoyment of this movie will depend on your enjoyment of previous works by Ethan in collaboration with Joel, because their movies are definitely not for everyone.
