Carol Danvers (Larson) gets her powers entangled with those of Kamala Khan (Vellani) and Monica Rambeau (Parris), forcing them to work together to save the universe.

The film premiered in Las Vegas on November 7, 2023, and was released in the United States on November 10, as part of Phase Five of the MCU. The film received mixed reviews from critics, who praised DaCosta’s direction and the chemistry between the three leads, but criticised its plot and lack of cohesive storytelling.

It’s an entry in the MCU, so of course I am going to give this a watch as they have yet to let me down. Others have had their little bitch fits over certain installments, but I ignore that shit. I just want some fun, escapist entertainment (like comic books), and they typically deliver. This installment is no exception!

I seriously have no idea why this is getting so much hate. It’s not like I can’t tell why certain movies get shit on (I’ve seen me some bottom of the barrel shit), but this one makes no sense to me. If you don’t like it fine, fair enough, that’s the nature of art. But those acting like this is one of the worst things ever is just fucking moronic! This movie is so much fun! The action is well staged like usual, fast and exciting. I have no idea where the claim of incoherence is coming from, the plot made sense to me (sure, I’m wired differently, but I can still tell proper plot structure).

The 3 leads have solid chemistry, playing extremely well off each other. Brie Larson as Carol Danvers seems to get shit for supposedly not having many facial expressions, but I see her emote plenty in this. It’s not like every face has to be something extreme to be different. This is pretty much why I assume it’s more about gender biases…

I’ve adored Iman Vellani as Kamal Kahn since she debuted as the character in the Disney+ series Ms. Marvel. She’s so adorkable in the role, believable as a teen with superpowers, and as someone having a fan girl reaction to meeting their hero.

Teyonah Parris is good as Monica Rambeau, providing the contrast of the other two with having superpowers, while not exactly wanting to be labeled a superhero.

The rest of the cast is solid too. Zawe Ashton makes for a credible antagonist, with motivations that aren’t strictly evil (like with most Marvel antagonists). Zenobia Shroff and Mohan Kapur are once again believable as Kamala’s sometimes overbearing, but still loving parents, while Saagar Shaikh fills out the older brother role, making for a convincing family.

And of course it’s always great to see Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury (but that’s basically true of any Jackson appearance). To me it’s another solid entry in this long running franchise, and I look forward to seeing more of it!
